A post office was established at Ames in 1885, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1985.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 title=Dodge County )〕 The community was likely named for Oakes Ames, a Union Pacific Railroad official.〔(Geographic Names Information System Feature Detail Report ), Geographic Names Information System, 1979-03-09. Ames was a station and shipping point on the Union Pacific Railroad.
